Today, we headed to the picturesque village of Kuranda situated in the rainforest. There are four ways to reach Kuranda - self-drive, public transport, Skyrail Rainforest Cableway or the Kuranda Scenic Railway. Although self-drive and public transport might be the most convenient or economical way, you may not be able to witness the scenic beauty of the rainforest. We chose the scenic railway while going to Kuranda and the cableway while returning. We purchased our tickets from here in advance. It included a return trip to the hotel too. The Kuranda Scenic Railway ride started from the Freshwater Railway station. It was an absolutely beautiful two hour ride all the way upto Kurunda. Our train passed through steep ravines, a number of tunnels and we got to see some breathtaking waterfalls. We stopped at a point to view the falls and take pictures. Once we reached Kuranda Railway Station, we indulged in some amazing scones and mango shake at the railway station cafe ... and not thats not my hungry stomach speaking! They were actually very good. Kuranda Village has a number of activities. There's a bus that starts from the railway station and takes you to the popular spots. However, you need to plan well. Some of the places have shows at a particular time and you wouldn't want to miss out on them. First, we visited the Kuranda Koala Gardens. We spent time with the beautiful native animals of Australia like wombats, wallabies, koalas, etc. I even managed to cuddle a koala, feed a kangaroo and take a selfie with it! Next, we headed to the Kuranda Heritage Market. This open-air market is filled with a number of shops selling souvenirs, handicrafts, jewelry and plenty more. We had lunch at a German restaurant in the market before heading to the cable car station. We missed checking out the Tjapukai Aboriginal Cultural Park as we ran out of time. If you plan your trip well, you can check out this Aboriginal show. As I mentioned earlier, our ride back was in a cable car. I'm scared of heights and every time our gondola shook, I freaked out! The ride was really beautiful though. We could see the entire rainforest from the top. The cable car stopped somewhere in between and we had to exit to take another cable car further. We also had an option of riding the Diamond View Gondola which has a transparent floor and offers a panoramic view of the rainforest. We didn't opt for it though.
